Tender is the night, by F. S. Fitzgerald

This novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1934.It tells the story of Dick Diver, a well-known psychologist who works in Zurich and who falls in love with Nicole Warren, a beautiful and rich patient of him. From that point on, he decides to marry her and together they will live many experiences (although not all good) until the (for me) unexpected ending.

Another peculiar point in this novel is that the charatcers are constantly travelling from one country to another and even from one continent to another (from America to Europe). This is so because the author himself loved travvelling and so he wrote down the experiences he had during during his trips. It must be also mentioned the great importance that had the parties in this novel mainly because in the age of Fitzgerald the social meetings such as parties were taken seriously.

What I liked the most about this book is the deep study that Fitzgerald does about all the characters and, as I later read, the fact that all the main characters in this novel were a reflection of the people surrounding the author and even his own self!

The most visible topics are: seduction and the war of the sexes which you can see in the increasing importance that the women in this novel acquire throughout the novel.

So if you want to know how life in the beginning of the twentieth century was like in Europe and the EEUU, you can’t miss this book!
