Sterols exist in the cell membranes of plants, animals, and microorganisms, and are called phytosterols, zoosterols, and mycosterols, respectively. Cholesterol (CHO) is the main sterol in vertebrates. Ergosterol (ERG) plays a key role in fungi. Plants usually have more complex sterol components.
Steroids function as important components of cell membranes and many of them are signaling molecules. All steroids are manufactured in cells from the sterols lanosterol (animals and fungi) or cycloartenol (plants). Lanosterol and cycloartenol are derived from the cyclization of the triterpene squalene.
